The Readers' Choice

This week's interviewee is another recent arrival to FoLCdom. She's based in Singapore and is unusual in being half of twin FoLCs - her sister, Meclone2, is also active in FoLCdom. While she's been reading fanfic for about eight years now, she only delurked relatively recently and now entertains us all by writing frequently insightful comments on works in progress on the Lois and Clark Fanfic Message Boards - ignore what she says about writing very short comment!

She is...

Metwin1

Whereabouts in the world are you?
Singapore, the Garden City

How long have you been a FoLC?
Since 1995 (I think).

What drew you to Lois and Clark?
The humour, and the chemistry between Teri and Dean drew me to the show.

When did you first discover fanfic?
About the same time I started watching Lois and Clark. Meclone2 (my twin sister) brought the existence of fanfiction to my attention.

What's the very first fanfic you read? Do you remember what your first thoughts were about the concept of fanfiction?
I can't remember the first story that I read. But I do remember that when I first started reading fanfiction, I only chose the stories that were no longer than 50k then. I read one that was 100k and I found it too long. *laughs* Those were the days. :)

What are your favourite sites for reading fanfic?
The Archives. It's only recently that I began reading fanfiction in the message boards. My dislike of having to wait for an instalment is offset by the fact that I can leave comments. Not that my comments are of any good. :P They are short on constructive criticism; mostly in the lines of "Loved it, post more soon".

List some stories you'd recommend to other readers.
Tons and tons. The list will be too long. :)

A new story goes up on the Archive or MBs. You drop everything - and we mean *everything* - to read it. So who would it be by? <g>
I drop everything to read fanfiction. I read the first few parts of every single new story to decide if I like it. I don't judge/choose the authors based on the previous stories that they'd written earlier. As Lois would say, "You are only as good as your next story." :)

What type of stories do you most enjoy reading, and why?
I enjoy both the long stories and short vignettes. However, for a long story, I do think that a credible A-plot is very important to get the story moving.

What's your opinion of:
Drama?
I like it. So long as it's realistic.

Action?
Ditto the above.

Romance?
Dialogue that's too mushy makes me cringe, so I'd say, ditto the above. :)

Tearjerkers?
I'd read them, but I don't really like them. I read LnC fanfic to lift my spirits. And tearjerkers just, well, make me depressed.

WAFFy vignettes?
I like it. It's in these stories that we see a truly humorous, gallant and chivalrous Clark, the epitome of a perfect man. Sigh.

Elseworlds?
I'm intrigued by them. It's interesting to read about Lois and Clark in a world that that's so similar, and yet so different from the one that we are accustomed to.

Alternate Universe/Beginnings?
Ditto the above.

Other (if we've failed to include your favourite type, here's your chance to set the record straight <g>)?
I don't think any genre is left out.

Can you choose one, possibly two, stories you'd consider personal favourites, and tell us what you like about them?
No. *pleadingly* I won't be able to choose just 2 stories. And then I'd spend too much time writing essays on why I like them.

Has everything been done in L&C fanfic? Are there any unexplored scenarios? Or doesn't it matter? <g>
It doesn't matter. As Lois would say, "There are no new stories, only new angles." :)

If you could be your favourite author's personal Muse, what would your dream story premise be?
I'd rather my favourite author surprise me with the premises HIS/HER muse come up with. :)

In your opinion, what makes for the best story? What ingredients, in your opinion, are essential to your favourite type of fanfic?
Humour, with a realistic plot and dialogue. And plenty of description so that we can "see" the scene that the author is trying to conjure up with her words.
