Too funny! I'm only 30 and I don't look like Teri (sigh ) but I do get a kick out of how popular my name is. Usually, I hear about Kathleen Brown, the politician from CA (a friend once had a magazine cover framed for me which read "Kathy Brown for President" ). Of course, the small town I lived in a few years ago had two of us, and we had the same doctor! I was always getting calls for her ... "just confirming your appointment for tomorrow". She even lived on a similar sounding street. Luckily she was 10 years older than me so I could convince the callers there were two of us. I never met her but I did have nice chats with several of her friends when they'd call Information and get my number by mistake. The funniest were when they'd be someone with the same name as a friend of *mine* and it would take the two of us a few minutes of conversation to figure out that we really didn't know each other. I guess there are advantages to having a more complex last name ... it got tiresome spelling my last name when I was single (put a Z and a -ski together and people freak , but if I had a nickle now for everyone that said "Kathy Brown? That's my brother's wife's cousin's name" ;) I'd be rich. Happy New Year everyone! As in "nothing." I used to walk into classrooms of 14-15 year olds and get "Don't you want to tell us your name, Miss?" EVERY SINGLE TIME (when I was doing Relief Teaching)! I believe that since I moved out of home and interstate, another Blank family has arrived, and even owns a restaurant across the road from where my brother used to work. I think Mum even mentioned that one of the owners is a Jenny Blank. My dad's name is Leon; until he retired he was a psychologist and marriage guidance counsellor. A couple of decades ago, he travelled to the US and tried to meet up with someone who had had articles printed in a psychology journal by the name of Leo Blank, but it just happened that this man was out of NY when dad was there :( Oh, and one more surname story: When my parents married, one of mum's uncles said (as part of the speeches) that he'd "never seen anyone so happy to draw a Blank in the Lottery of Life." (wait, it gets worse...) My older sister married a guy by the name of Andrew Same. Dad told the above story at the wedding and added, "I'm so glad to see my daughter's done the Same." Oh, and Megan, my daughter's name, is not pronounced Meggan. It's Meeeg'n. She also answers to Meggie, or Murgatroid, or MeggyMoo, or MissMoo. Or even just Moo! And we've seen it misspelled as Meagan and Meghan too. We also tried to go for the simplest spelling to avoid that. So much for that idea! I can always tell when teachers/professors get to my name in roll call because they pause and make a confused face. Christiane, which is pronounced "Christy Anne" was made up by my mother, even though it is also a French name. Talk about odd names, I've only ever *heard of* three other people with my first name, never met any. Teachers usually think it's "Christian" misspelled, so they think I'm a guy. My maiden name was Angerer, which is a German name (-er means "person of" and Anger means "field or meadow", which gives me rather humble roots, which I like) and it is pronounced anger-rer. The best I ever got out of my classmates growing up was "anger-er" with something of a glottal stop before the second "er". The name was regularly misprounounced as "anjerer," "angrier" (and there were a lot of jokes about anger to go with that) or even "angler" though I have no idea where the L could come from. So I was much relieved to be marrying a Crawford, a nice simple name that almost nobody ever asks me to spell. :) My only complaint has been that "Emily Crawford" sounds like some kind of romance novelist. I told this to a bunch of FoLCs on IRC when I was trying to pick a nickname, and they said, "So why not just become a romance novelist, then?" I like the way we think. Incidentally, I use the full "Emily Angerer Crawford" on my professional work, and I noticed the other day that my German advisor has me on his web site as just "Emily Angerer." I'm not married so I can't say how my name has changed. :o) However, I have had some name problems. My name is Cristin Jo Whitley. First off, there were SO many baby girls born in the early 80s named Cristin/Christen/Kristin/Kristen/Cristen/Christin. Ahem, and there are a lot of ways to spell it. I've only met one person who spells it the same way that I do, but I've heard of a million! Seems at least once a week some customer at work will stop me and say, "Oh my goodness! My daughter/aunt/cousin/sister/wife/niece (you get the point) spells her name like that. I have never seen it spelled that way anywhere else!" Seems there are a lot of Cristins out there. Odd that I've only met one. Maybe they are all hidden from the world... living in underground dwellings or in treehouses or in the witness protection program. I don't know! Anyway, the first day of school has always been stinky for me. See, I used to go by C.J. (because there were so many Cristin/Kristen/Christen/etc people). So I would always have to correct every teacher. Now that I use my actual name again (guess all the people with similar names failed, moved, or dropped out of school???), I still get it messed up. Substitute teachers have called me Christian, Christine, Christina, Kirsten, etc. With my last name being Whitley and the role being last name, first name... I get called Whitney a lot too. Also, once my grandmother ordered something from some catalog... they changed the WH to SH in my last name... Cristin (no e, no a) Jo (no e... I live in Norwich (UK), and have done for over 40 years. For about 10 years here, our City head of the 'Waste Disposal Department' (dustbin men) was called *Ms Smellie* - I kid you not - his name was on the doors of all the City's Dustbin vans!!!! My maiden name (now my middle name too!) was Parker. No one knew how to pronounce Cassandra. Was it Cas Sandra or Ca Saundra. So I chose Cassy for short, well then my name suddenly became Casey. Sheesh. So it went to CASS (IE) When people finally figured out that c*ASS*ie rhymed with another unappealing word it was easy to tease me. Especially when Parker turned to PORKER. Now it is simple: CASSIE NEIL short and easy, I could stand that after years of teasing and mispronouncations.. Of course people don't know what the heck my husband's name is. Is he James, Jim, or is he Neil. (actually he goes by Jon, his middle name). With a last name that is also a 1st name people (you know people) can get easily confused with something so complicated. Come to find out there's another Brian Love in our area and he even had an account at the same bank! That unnerved us. We had no problems, fortunately, and have since changed to a bank that is closer to our home. As for my maiden name, it's Artzberger. Actually, it's pronounced just like it looks (ARTSburger), but the telemarketers could never get it right. The name is German and supposedly means 'doctor of the hills'. I got a lot of ribbing growing up-- one taunting male in elementary school even started calling me 'Aardvark'! ;-) As for my first name, I'm a Lynda with a 'y', and it's interesting how many people forget that. People who have known me for years still write my name with an 'i'. Geez.... My married name, Love, is a lot easier to sign than Artzberger-- I definitely got a deal there. But still, you'd be surprised how many people mishear my last name. I lot of people hear it as 'Lowe', so I still have to spell it a lot. Or maybe it's just that they don't believe that a person with the first name of Lynda could have a last name of Love. :-) Anyone have specialized license plates with their last name? So, just out of curiousity do you >think it's strange that we are all like this? >Kristen >Kristen036@aol.com Hi there, y'all! OBSESSION Being a recent FoLC myself (around 5 months - and that's recent compared to a number of you guys out there) since the show came to Portugal in 1998 (the show was televised before, but I missed it), I guess I can't compare. But I can honestly say that I will be obsessed by L&C forever... You see, this is not the only TV show I'm obsessed with. I love The Beauty And The Beast and I'm absolutely crazy for the X-Files. I'm also an Elvis fan since I was 9 (I'm 28 now). And I've been having so much fun because I'm this way, that I really don't wanna change. LOIS &CLARK ENDED IN PORTUGAL - PEOPLE COMPLAINED Speaking of L&C again, though. Here the show ended at the beginning of December. I knew how it was going to end because of you, guys... because I have access to Internet, I have e-mail, etc... and our media doesn't usually inform people about these things. Anyway, I recently saw an article in one of our main mags where they mentioned the amount of people who wrote TVI (the tv channel televising the show) complaining for having ended televising the show before it actually ended...! They were also complaining for them having replaced L&C by Robocop. They don't like Robocop... I wonder if the magazine will explain to these unfortunate people (they still believe there are more eps to be shown...) that the show was cancelled and that's all they're gonna get. Lots of friends of mine started watching the show too influenced by me and I got several phone calls asking when the next episode was going to be televised... they all got *very* surprised to find out that that was it. And disappointed, too. SURNAMES - FUNNY RELATED THINGS Now moving on to the surnames subject. I really had fun reading your posts on this matter. I only regret I can't do the same. I have *loads* of funy stories regarding names and surnames (starting with my own name), but it's only funny in Portuguese. You see, Portuguese people have a very specific and ironical sense of humor. They turn everything into a joke. You can't imagine the jokes we have on Bill Cliton (poor man...!). And we love to turn our own culture, habits, customs and names/surnames into jokes, too. We also have very long names. I have four names and that's considered normal for us. But I know people with seven and eight names and once I knew someone with 13 names...! And she wasn't even descendant of royalty (our kings and queens had very long names). Sometimes the names put together make a full sentence with meaning. Sometimes *very* funny meanings come out of this. It's a pity I can't share some stories with you. They're all naughty : ) MY OWN STORY It's very common in my country to have names of animals, food and professions. Animals like: Chicken (Galinha/Frango) and their little ones (Pinto), Pig (Leitao), Cow (Vacas), Rabbit (Coelho), etc... Food like: Milk (Leite), Bread (Pao), Fish (Peixe), ect... And you can have two food or animal names in a row. I know this sounds funny in English: "How are you, Mr. Pig? And how's Mrs. Pig doing?" My last two names are Pereira (Pear Tree) and Carvalho (Oak Tree). *But* my very last name also means a nasty/dirty word without the *v*. I mean, a *very* nasty word... you can't imagine the jokes I was subject to, especially while I was growing up. Well, all right, I'll tell you what it means... tt means the male sex, but the nasty way, the nasty word (s). And once, when I was at college and was doing my application, the secretary misspelled my name, not *that* way though, thank goodness (she wrote Cavalho). But my Marketing teacher was calling our names for the first time in his class and he stopped at my name, he raised his eyebrows and asked "Carvalho?" He was the only teacher doing this, because everyone knew it was a typo anyway. I just rolled my eyes and said, "Yeah, it's misspelled, but it's Carvalho." (I did it on purpose) Everybody started laughing and asking how it was written and my teacher (poor guy) blushed a lot. We were a class of around 70 girls and he always remembered my name from that first day onwards and always smiled, looking at me. Sorry for taking so much of your time and thanks for reading! So, just out of curiousity do you think it's strange that we are all like this? >> Well, there's fandoms that have been around a long time like Star Trek, which has been mentioned by several people, though there is a worry currently that Trek as a "franchise" is losing steam. The original series didn't attract a huge fandom until four or five years after it was canceled and brought back in syndicated reruns around 1973. Then the movies started in the late 70s and then TNG, DS9 and Voyager. The odd thing about TNG is that once the series was over, it started faltering as strictly a rerun product and started disappearing from various markets or being shifted into the wee hours of the morning. That becomes the ultimate test of a show's longevity. How well it can maintain and attract a following once no more new episodes are made, or how many people will continue watching the reruns repeatedly even though they've seen them all. It's one reason the original Trek had such an advantage (that and it was truly a character-driven show when such programs were rare) VCRs as a common piece of household equipment were over a decade away, and so old- timers like me watched the reruns over and over again because that was the only way to see them. When VCRs became common, some people tended to collect a series and then never watch the reruns again. Especially if a series had a definite, or perhaps more correctly, a "finite" series-ending episode or movie. That is, all series eventually become history, but some can become "living" history, the feeling that the characters are still out there having adventures, making love, making babies, having a life, etc., while other series become "dead" history because they slam the book closed with little left to the imagination as to the characters' outcome. Lastly, Celia Maria Pereira de Carvalho wrote: >>>Sorry for taking so much of your time and thanks for reading!<<<< Don't be sorry. I loved reading about viewers in Portugal. Speaking of streets, (now I'm on a roll) there is a street in San Antonio called St. Mary's. It's a nice normal street only its down town and it's split up into about 5 different sections, you'll start out on St. Mary's and after a few blocks you'll be on Frio, then a few more blocks you'll be back on St. Mary's. it does this all the time, see that section that should be where Frio is is about 3 blocks over and parallel.
