"Sorry." she mumbled with her head down and a tissue in her hand. Clark, stunned by the bump didn't say anything. Lois looking back from the door to see what kept her husband, noticed a piece of paper at Clark's feet. Lois came over and picked it up. Reading it quickly, she asked, "Did that woman drop this?" "I guess so." Clark shrugged. ---NEXT--- Sorry Brad, =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | Gary A. But personally, DIRTY BUBBLES has the absolute best punch line that I can remember. >> First, before I get into 'punch lines', I want to thank all the kind and thoughtful remarks about various fanfic stories I've written over the years. That's extremely flattering of you Folc, and touching. I've been absent from this and other interesting threads the last several days, not due to lack of interest, but because, as anyone on IRC can tell you, I have been fighting the monster of computer technology on behalf of my sister. Trying to get my sister's computer up to 125mhz, with 40meg RAM and upgrading Windows 3.1 to Win 95 and a zip drive reminds me of that line from Mystery Science Theater 3000 "What is it about the gates of Hell that compels people to wonder into to 'em?" For the time being, my sister seems set up and running, so I'll leap in here. First, on the "nfic" issue. I'll just quote one of my fave SF authors when he said "Good Science Fiction is simply good fiction." I think the same is true of good nfic. Science Fiction is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and the same holds true of nfic. They are both specific genres of fiction that either appeal or do not. When some of us get together and write nfic live on the IRC, I (and several others) just write the 'fanfic' part, but not the 'nfic' part. I greatly admire those who can write an impromptu sensual scene (Peace, Sheila, Demi, Julie and others) on the channel. To me there is a difference between erotica and pornography, and the best nfic is erotica. It has a sensual quality borne of mutual love and trust between the characters of Lois and Clark. There is nfic, just as fanfic, that I don't like, and that's because it deals with themes or elements that don't appeal to me personally. Other than the erotic interludes, I don't see much difference to the two types of fic, and enjoy them both. On the issue of favorite stories, well, that number would be legion I often get stories sent to me long before they are finished, and due to that, I often don't know what the title of the story ends up being when it finally hits the fanfic list or archive. I think I'm like Clark in that I remember 'the moments' and like Lois in that "that's the part that touches me" ;) Whether it's a great vignette (Gary has written many of those, or Jeagan from the AOL boards) or a full blown story with an 'A plot' (like Sheila's, or the story Eileen sent me before I took my flight ;) or a story that is like a long vignette in that it has no 'A plot' (like Chris's Kansas City story) it's the emotional impact moment all fanfic contains that attracts me. Also, I read the Superman comics, and so I even enjoy stories that delve a bit in that direction like most of Jon Knutson's stories, or any one who has written an 'Elseworld' story. As for punch lines, thanks Beverly, this is the part where I'm like Tempus (God, I love irony ;) 'Dirty Bubbles' allows me to bring up a genre of fiction I love to do, I call it "request fic". That is, someone says they want me to write a story for them. I think 'Dirty Bubbles' came about because Bev Clark (or Becky, can't remember) posted to LOISCLA that she had purchased Superman bubble bath and thought it would make a cute fanfic involving Lois and then wrote something like "hint hint..Zoom" and so I took the hint She had no premise or anything, she just wanted a story involving Lois and a bubble bath, but sometimes that's all it takes when someone does a request to "get the juices flowing" on a fanfic. 12:01 was a "request fic" from Angie, but all she said was she wanted to see the date L&C made at the end of Individual Responsibility and the only stipulation was that it take place in an Indian restaurant. I don't know if other fanfic writers do requestfic, but it's a lot of fun. I tend to call the 'punch line' part of any story the 'payoff'. I can honestly say I have no idea how my stories will end until I reach the end. I can't work from an outline (not mine, but I can work from someone else's) I'd actually love to hear how fanfic writers on the list work. What prompts a fanfic writer to cover a certain story premise? And when they do, why a certain direction, and not another? That's the part that fascinates me. Anyway, sorry for the long ramble, but I wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and the interesting topics. This way we can do the whole awards thing again next year with the 1998 stories. Round Robin: Hey Baby [1]: Gary -- the pilot --- Lois and Clark were about to enter the Daily Planet when a lady bumped into Clark. "Sorry." she mumbled with her head down and a tissue in her hand. Clark, stunned by the bump didn't say anything. Lois looking back from the door to see what kept her husband, noticed a piece of paper at Clark's feet. Lois came over and picked it up. Clark shrugged. ---NEXT--- Round Robin: Hey Baby [0 - completely unaware and mostly innocent ;-) ]: Brad at The Gardner Family --- innocence --- Sheena, It's been a while and it felt so good to hold you in my arms last night. Lois asked her beloved husband after reading the message aloud. "So, what ?" he responded, "what's just a romantic boy happy to hold ..." "Clark, get a grip. You may play the innocent farmboy in Kansas if you like. But here in Metropolis you should try to be a top investigating reporter, determined to get all the clues out of this secret code. I know you have the bite if you like," Lois fumed. "So 'It's been a while' means that they have been waiting for some time, if that is what you are thinking of," Clark surrendered, knowing for better than trying to get rag & bones out of the fangs of mad dog Lane in action. "You know," she continued, "they say one thing and mean the other or play with different meanings of the words or - Brad at the Gardner familiy - they write it down blatantly blunt. Clark, That's the Gardner family - the mafia ! And Brad, their Godfather's offspring signed this message !" "Lois, that's a wild tangent." Clark interjected, "The Gardner family is respected. He held her in check of his weapons. He was aiming at her !" "Nah, Lois," her husband reminded her, "that doesn't have to have this meaning." "But Clark, he missed her," Lois insisted, "that means that he may still be going for Sheena. I just hope she knows that's coming for her - that he's pretty serious about her ! " "Ok, next clue, " Clark surrendered, " last night - the opposite would be - tomorrow." "Carver, and his dreaded Tomorrow. Sorrows never die !" Lois exploded, "if i ever get my hands on that devil again, i'm gonna squeeze him and squeeze him 'til the evil grins !" "Lois, i am sorry for Paris", Clark tried to comfort her as tears slowly formed in her eyes, "we all know you two were pretty close, just if you had shared your childhood." "Wasn't Brosnan into a bond thing to protect her ?", Jimmy interjected. "It's a shame that they might get away with it", Perry concluded. "No, they won't. Paris and i have often been asked if we were twins looking so much alike the other in our youth. So the decided to change our hairs every now and then to point out our individuality. I will take her place and get to the ground. " "You might get to the ground of the themse that way, " Clark thought to himself and said " I am with you, Lois. We owe Paris truth and justice." "zero zero naught - you most naughty agent in service of her majesty, " Lois vowed, " I'm gonna slap your face for sure the next time i meet you." ---NEXT--- ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 03:22:38 PST Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Peace Everett Subject: Re: Round Robin: Hey Baby [0..2] In-Reply-To: <34C845F9.CAFBD549@s-direktnet.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1"; X-MAPIextension=".TXT" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable This was hilarious!!! Ditto on the nfic stuff and what makes any kind of fanfic good. One reason I have such a hard time coming up with a list of "favorite" (as opposed to "good" - I'd agree with most of the lists of top stories that were discussed before) is that I'm in the very small group of fans who prefer stories *within* the continuity. I may be the only person who likes the revelation on the show better than any of the ones done in fanfic. When I say "within the continuity" - I mean a story that doesn't directly contradict an event that we knew about at the time the story was written. For instance, Zoomway's "Counter Clark-Wise" (*my* first fanfic - lucky for me) is set in the first season's continuity, and doesn't require that you ignore anything else that happened then, or subsequently. In-between stories that expand on stuff that happened on-screen are a popular genre, but to me, the best ones don't introduce any events or knowledge that can't be tied into what happened in later episodes. This is pretty restrictive, I know, and I'm not sure why I feel this way - maybe it goes back to my affection for the show itself, which anyone knows who's read my posts, is about as unconditional as you can get. As I said, though, there are lots of wonderful stories that don't meet this criterion at all, but when one does, it's especially appealing to me. On the question of why or how a story gets written - that differs a lot from writer to writer, but it's a very interesting question and I hope other authors will go into more detail about their motivations. I've only stuck my toe in the fanfic waters, and perhaps for that reason, my own motivation was very clear to me. I had a very strong emotional reaction to one of the aspects of the alternate dimension episodes that never had a chance to be resolved. That was the problem the Other-Lois would face when she was found (I never doubted she would be ) - the feeling of being second choice. I''ve always disliked romances in which the heroine was a widow or in some way a substitute for someone else. Those of you on this list who read romances, which is a genre of popular fiction with a remarkable pedigree which sufffers from Rodney Dangerfield syndrome ) know the kind of story I mean. So I started trying to figure out a way that Other-Lois and Other-Clark could meet and be attracted to each other unencumbered by our Lois' memory. That's why I wrote what I did and why I chose the premise I chose. I think since it was an intellectual exercise as much as anything else (I use the word "intellectual" loosely, I assure you) it's not likely it will ever be so easy for me again. I really admire the writers who produce so many stories, and especially the ones who can think on their feet and write extemporaneously on-line. I experience brain freeze under those circumstances.;) This was probably more than you wanted to know ;) - thanks for the chance to ramble. :) Georgia ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 07:56:45 +0000 Reply-To: dor2302@usa.net Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Comments: Authenticated sender is From: Doris Schmill Subject: Round Robin: Hey Baby [0 ... 3] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT January 23, 1998 Hey, Guys! The old newshound seemed to sniff the air carefully while giving his ace reporter, Mad Dog Lois Lane, a scrutizing look. "Well, since things are somewhat slow at the moment ..." "Chief, we don't really know if there is anything more to this note than meets the eye," Clark interjected. Then, noticing that Lois was beginning to fume, he quickly added, "I do trust Lois's instincts. But it could really just be the note from one lover to the other." "Or you two could end up unearthing something really hot. There has been talk of an underground arms ring for some time. In fact, Inspector Henderson called me this very morning, asking if I could spare you for an investigation that may or may not yield results." Lois and Clark each drew in a sharp breath and looked at each other. Then Lois spoke up. "Henderson has a fine nose for the scent of a good story. If it's all right with you, I think we should pick up the trail as long as it is still fresh. I'll get ready as Paris ..." "No, you won't!" Both Clark and Perry chorused. There was a long moment of silence. Then both man laughed. "You first, Chief." "If this is really what Henderson, and obviously you, too, Lois, think it is, this situation is far too dangerous to pulling of any masquerade singlehandedly. All I want you to do for now is do some prelimenary work. Then lets get back together and decide what to do. If you take on that story, I want you on it together, like Siamese twins." "Or Siamese cats," Lois mumbled under her breath. "I'm allergic to them." "What was that?" Perry asked while Clark silently groaned and roled his eyes heavenwards. "Lois still has to write up the article on the cat show you had her cover last week," Clark quickly interupted. "But I'm sure that can wait another day or so, can't it, Chief? And I totally agree with you. If we take this on, we'll stick together in this one." Perry considered this for a moment, then laid a hand on each of his top reporter team's shoulders. "Well, if we're all in agreement, then what are you two waiting for?" With that, he gently turned them around and steered them back towards the elevators. ****** Down in the lobby, Lois and Clark came to a halt by the doorway. Quickly developing a plan of action, they decided that Lois would meet up with Henderson while Clark would make a super-round. They kissed goodbye quickly and parted. Clark followed his wife out onto the street and looked after her as she made her way to the car. Then, unable to shake an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, he ducked into the nearest corner, spun into the suit. Following his instincts as Lois had taught him, he spontaneously decided that this particular super-round would put him on the trail of a certain female reporter. He caught up quickly with the familiar jeep as it neared the intersection, flying high enough, though, to stay out her sight. And sure enough, the turn she took wouldn't take her to police headquarters. This isn't being put together to take anything away form separate fanfics dealing with the 'soulmate' aspect of the show, just a fun project for whomever is interested. Here's the guidelines Annie set up: "Dear Friends, It is my understanding I am to write an outline of what is to be included in the possible prologue and epilogue of each SoulMate Chronicles So here are my thoughts on them........ The prologue is set in the place where are all souls converge including the souls of Lois and Clark. There they are together until a situation deems it necessary they separate. Once the situation resolves itself their souls return back when their bodies no longer cease to be. All dialogue between the two can be joking, flirty, serious, but always loving. What we have seen and loved about Lois and Clark will be included in all earthly bodies their souls encase. The catch phrase of the series......could be..."You are always leaving but....I always come back".. I hope this will be helpful. If not let me know and I will try again. This Drake is No Sitting Duck (1/4) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" This took me ages to write. Mainly because I wandered off to write other fanfics. What can I say? At a certain point in the story I got seriously stuck (can you guess where?) This takes place somewhere after the "Resurrection" episode during the latter half of season two and before Lois found out that CK=S. It's obviously in an alternate universe to the series. As a result, this story comes with a full second season health warning! Thanks to Lynda Love and Genevieve for taking the time on editing (especially Genevieve for insisting I switch some scenes around) and to Kathy Brown, for teaching me to listen to my editors! This Drake is No Sitting Duck By Leanne Shawler (volterra@sd.znet.com) Her eyelids flickered twice before opening. It took a moment longer for her eyes to focus, but at last the room swam into sharp detail. It was dark, but from the light sneaking between the cracks in the blinds, she guessed it was around midday. "Where am I?" she wondered. She recalled a deafening noise, a great pain, Clark holding her in his arms and then ... Nothing but blackness. Clark. Her brow furrowed and Mayson caught her breath as she remembered seeing the Superman logo peeping from between the popped buttons of his pale blue shirt. In the instant before she lost consciousness, Mayson Drake had discovered Clark was Superman. He had deceived her! Superman equals Clark? She shook her head in disbelief, moaning as sparks of pain bounced around inside her head. It certainly explained his strange behaviour, including the odd departures that Lois Lane took for granted. 'But Lois must know,' Mayson thought to herself. Many questions rose to the forefront of her mind, but she pushed them away as the door opened and a new dilemma presented itself. "Lex!" she gasped. Lex Luthor, bald and dressed in dark combat fatigues, delivered his most charming smile as he approached her bedside. "So you are awake, my dear Ms. Drake." "Where ... where am I?" Mayson's blue eyes reflected her bewilderment. "I thought I was in a hospital." "A hospital?" Lex restrained his amusement. "My dear Mayson, may I call you that? This is my own private clinic, far better than any hospital in Metropolis." "I find it hard to believe that Intergang didn't take over everything of yours when you were put away." Mayson frowned. "You should still be in jail." Mayson struggled to sit up, but she was so weak that a gentle shove from Lex sent her sprawling back into the pillows, panting. "Mayson, you have been ... ill," Luthor accented the word oddly, "for quite some time. I'm out on parole, living the life of a reformed citizen." "How long have I been here?" Mayson asked, dazed by both her weakness and the length of time she'd been unconscious. "That's not important," Lex told her, dismissing the subject with a short wave of his hand. "What is important is that I have saved your life and you owe me." "I owe you nothing!" Her eyes sparked with indignation, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. "No?" Luthor appeared unfazed by her resistance. "Let me tell you a little story." He settled himself on the edge of her bed and folded his hands on his lap. He looked utterly relaxed, yet oddly concentrated, his brown eyes fastened appraisingly on her face. He looked so different from the old, suave businessman, his handsome looks marred by his complete baldness. When Mayson had interviewed him for the trial before the Resurrection case came up, she had found him a broken man, but obviously something had occurred since then to rejuvenate his ambition. In her current helpless state, Mayson was more than a little scared. Not that she was about to show it. "Once upon a time," began Lex pleasantly, although his eyes were cold, "there was a pretty blonde Assistant D.A. who got too close to discovering the secret of a crazy scientist who wanted to destroy all of Metropolis. No one," snarled Lex suddenly, "destroys something that I *want*." He composed himself and continued. "This scientist thought it would be a great joke if he made it appear that this Assistant D.A. had died in a car explosion, but really she would die much later, slowly and painfully by asphyxiation in her coffin, buried under six feet of earth." Mayson's breath caught painfully in her throat, imagining herself in that enclosed space, slowly running out of air. Her eyes wide with fear, she gasped, "Resurrection!" "Precisely, my dear." Lex's eyes showed his amusement. "But then why am I--? Then how--?" "I still have some people loyal to me, and at my instructions, they ensured your removal from your coffin after the funeral and brought you here. As it so happened, the explosion caused some damage, but I was prepared for that. Now you have recovered and are ready to serve me." "Don't be so sure on that last part, Luthor," Mayson replied, raising her chin in determination. "Oh, but I am," Luthor leant forward and gently caressed her cheek. Mayson flinched and received a quiet "tsk, tsk" for her troubles. Lex straightened up. "For you see, Ms. Drake, as well as having received nutrition intravenously, these past few weeks, you have also been injected with a poison currently rendered inactive by the presence of its antidote." Mayson's eyes went wide with horror, and an almost silent "no!" escaped her lips. "When you go out from here to do my bidding, your body will contain a biological time-bomb, tick-ticking away until, mission completed, you return here and receive the antidote. If you fail, you die." In her current weakened state, Mayson could only play along. "What ... what is it that you want me to do?" "That's my girl!" Lex smiled in approval. "I want you to kill Lois Lane." "Lois?" Mayson was stunned. "If she won't have me, then no one will have her." "But how? I can't--" He patted her hand reassuringly, at that time curled into a fist of frustration by her side. "Don't worry, my dear. All will be revealed in time. Now you need to rest and recover your strength. You're going to need it." He rang the buzzer by her bedside. Immediately, a nurse entered, bearing a covered tray. "Sleep well." Lex rose and studied the now clearly frightened Mayson Drake watch the nurse prepare an injection. He remained to see the needle slide beneath her skin, before leaving. Mayson winced slightly. Mayson was smart. Before she drifted off into unconsciousness, she knew already that Lex had no intention of giving her the antidote whether or not she managed to successfully kill Lois. She had to play along for now. Play along, and find some way, somehow, of getting that antidote. **** Mayson Drake stood at the door to freedom -- or death. Beside her stood Luthor, deadly serious as he handed her a briefcase. "You know your instructions," said Luthor. "Lure Lois to Kent's apartment. Then," his voice became softer, awed, "BOOM!" His hands moved outwards, in mimicry of the explosion. "And this time it will be Clark Kent behind bars, not I." Mayson looked down at the briefcase: it had CK initialled in gold into the leather. She gave a little shiver. 'All right,' she thought, 'so Clark was a liar, but that didn't mean he deserved the fate Luthor had planned for him.' "I don't understand why you need me for this," protested Mayson. "This is your initiation, Mayson, my dear." His hand cupped her cheek. This time Mayson didn't flinch, but after a moment she lowered her eyes from his rapine gaze. "My people will be loyal to me and me only. No outside interference and that includes your little passion for Kent. The world thinks you're dead. Let it remain so -- and you shall personally remove the last temptation for coming back to life." He moved in and kissed her hard before breaking it off, giving Mayson no time to react. "You *are* mine." Mayson backed off, her eyes widening like a startled rabbit's and stood quivering until she reasserted her self-control. She knew he meant as his slave, for his heart, such that it was, still clearly belonged to Lois. Straightening her back and squaring her shoulders, she grasped the briefcase firmly and walked out the door opened by Luthor's minion. He closed the door and turned to Luthor. "What if she betrays us?" he asked. "Then," Lex paused dramatically, "she will die and we'll find another way of dealing with Mr. Kent." He arched his eyebrows as he smiled. **** Mayson Drake stepped out of the yellow cab and boldly strode into the Daily Planet building. Moments later, she stepped out of the elevator and looked down into the busy newsroom. There was Clark, his eyes focused on the monitor, typing up a story. Watching him unseen like this, Mayson had one breathless moment of seeing him as the man she adored -- Clark Kent -- before the image of Superman superimposed itself. Her face, if anyone had been watching, was as soft and open as the first time Mayson had asked Clark out. She could hardly believe her audacity then or now. With the thought of Superman, her face transformed into a quickly masked look of betrayal and anger. Mayson damped these feelings down; they could be sorted out later, but now she needed Clark's -- Superman's -- help. Straightening her shoulders, Mayson walked down the gangway. Jimmy, on his way to Perry's office with a handful of copy, did a double-take when he saw the slim blonde, but he shook his head and continued on. Nobody else in the bustling newsroom noticed her. She stepped up to Clark's desk and stood for a moment, clutching the briefcase tightly with both hands, waiting for him to notice her. Finally, Mayson glanced over her shoulder to check if Lois was at her desk. Mayson hadn't even noticed whether she was there or not on her way in, her eyes fixed upon Clark. She wasn't at her desk. Mayson bent over Clark's desk, her figure casting a shadow over his keyboard. She cleared her throat quietly. "Clark? Is there some place private we can talk?" Clark looked up, startled, his brown eyes widening with shock as he matched the voice with the face. "Mayson!?" he exclaimed. Mayson hushed him. "Please, Clark? This is very important." Clark stumbled to his feet. 'Why does he do that?' Mayson wondered. 'Superman shouldn't stumble.' "Uhh, sure," he said. "Through here. " He led Mayson into the conference room. Alone in the conference room, Clark sat down awkwardly, and gestured Mayson to a seat. Mayson shook her head and started to pace. "You remember, don't you." Clark said finally. "If you mean about you being Superman, yes!" Mayson's eyes flashed. Clark thought it was the light. She took a deep breath. "Just *what* do you think you are playing at?" "Huh?" Clark was taken aback by her vehemence. "This Superman thing! It's the single most egotistical, conceited and pretentious act I've ever seen! Excepting Luthor, of course." "Thanks for the exception." Clark said dryly and his brows beetled into a frown. "Gee, you know the first thing I thought you'd do would be to slap me with a deportation suit." Clark sat up straighter. He'd missed arguing with Lois ... "Well, I thought of that, but one: I'm supposed to be dead and two: where do I deport you *to*?" Mayson folded her arms and glared. "Well, aren't you going to answer my question?" Clark got up and started pacing. "Mayson, I'm not playing at anything. My powers are a gift. I didn't even know I had them until I reached my teens. Until then I was just a normal kid growing up on a farm. Until then I was just like anybody else. Now that I have them, I can't *not* use them. Don't you see that?" "But you're usurping the law! It's vigilantism, pure and simple! You could become a cop ..." Like Clark, Mayson was now standing, arms akimbo, glaring at the super hero. "As Clark Kent? I'm more likely to be shipped off to some lab and dissected like a frog! I want to help serve society to the best of my ability and still have a normal life!" "I don't see you in a lab now." They stared angrily at each other. Lois walked in. Clark angled behind his co-worker and shook his head warningly at Mayson. "Uhh, Lois," he said, "I really don't think--" "Clark, we're a team. We do things together." Lois stated firmly. She marched past him and faced Mayson. "It is Mayson Drake, isn't it?" Lois asked, before she lost the initiative. "Yes," replied Mayson. "It is. I really don't have the time to explain." She ignored Clark's raised eyebrow. "If I don't have Superman's help within 24 hours, I will be dead." "I'm sure Superman will do whatever he can, even for those who don't like his vigilantism," Clark said as they all sat around the conference table. "What should I tell him?" "I have poison in my bloodstream." She had to pause to think, in order to frame her sentences carefully without tipping that she knew his secret identity. "Superman has to get the antidote from Luthor's clinic. I'll give you the address." "Luthor!" the reporting duo exclaimed, drowning out her last sentence. "You've seen Lex?" Lois asked, leaning forward on her elbows. "You have his address?" "Yes." Mayson looked at Lois and Clark alternately, wondering at their surprise. "Why are you so keen? He's not a wanted man anymore, Lois, although he's definitely still a criminal!" Lois glanced at her co-worker as Clark replied, "Luthor escaped from prison about a month ago. He hasn't been seen or heard of since. Yours is the first report." Mayson was stunned. "He told me ..." She gave herself an angry shake. "Oh! I should have known he was lying!" She quickly scribbled out the address on a piece of scrap paper and handed the address to Clark, who passed it on to Lois. "Lex told me you solved the Resurrection case. Was he lying about that too?" "No, he wasn't," Clark replied. Mayson saw him glance over at Lois. The fleeting look of concern he gave Lois made Mayson realise that the case had involved a close call. No doubt Superman had saved the day yet again. "OK, I'll make this brief." Mayson quickly detailed her own resurrection and last of all, Lex's plan. "But why?" asked Lois. "To kill you, Lois, and implicate Clark in turn, which once done would leave me firmly in Luthor's hands forever." Mayson's fingernails tapped against the handle of the briefcase. "There's a bomb in here. I'm supposed to lure Lois to your apartment, Clark, and leave this briefcase behind." "So why are you here?" If Lois felt uneasy about the presence of the bomb, she didn't show it. "Lex is a double crosser. I don't trust him to give me the antidote once I complete his task. And even if he did, I don't want to be ensnared either." Mayson took a deep breath. "That's why I need Superman's help. I'm in no rush to die again." "How is Superman going to be able to find the antidote?" Clark asked. "There's only one way to find out." Lois stood and turned to Clark. "Clark, go find Superman and get him to grab the antidote and then meet us at Star Labs." "I'll get right on it." Clark seemed relieved to escape. "Wait, Clark!" Mayson called him back. Clark halted in the doorway. Mayson turned to Lois. "Lois, could I have a couple of minutes alone with Clark?" "Sure." Lois looked strangely at the two of them and left the room, shutting the conference room door behind her. She saw Jimmy and called him over. "Yes, Lois?" "Jimmy, phone ahead to Star Labs and tell them that I'm bringing someone who needs an antidote." Jimmy looked through the conference room window. White-faced, he exclaimed, "Mayson?!" Lois turned her smile on him. "Just do it, Jimmy. I'll explain it all later." Inside the conference room, Clark folded his arms and gazed at Mayson. Mayson looked ashamed. "I'm sorry, Clark, but when I realise that the only reason you were brave enough to be a witness for me was because knew all along that you would be invulnerable to any attack by Intergang..." Mayson shook her head. "I thought you were the bravest, most upstanding man I had ever met. And now ..." Her voice began to tremble. "Now?" Clark's defensive anger had drained away. "And now I don't know what to think. How brave can you be, if you're invulnerable?" "Mayson, why do you think I hide my true identity behind this cape? I'm afraid for the safety of the ones I love ... I don't know my limits and I'm certainly not invulnerable." "Kryptonite." "Yes, Kryptonite." "I'm sorry, Clark." Mayson wearily pushed her blonde hair back from her forehead. "I only know that you're the only one who can help me. You're my only hope. I'm sorry." Clark shook his head. "Dr. Klein is great at unsolved mysteries. I'm sure he can discover a cure for you." He rose and took her gently by the arm. "Come on, Lois is waiting." Lois stood by her desk saw them. She said to Mayson, "If Superman can't find the antidote, Star Labs will start making one." Mayson's thanks were heartfelt, adding, "I don't know if it will be that easy." "Worth a try." Lois attempted a smile. **** Dr Klein took a sample of Mayson's poisoned blood which he hoped would contain some trace of the antidote or the poison. He hoped to find both. Mayson convinced Lois to go back to the Planet while she pretended to continue to carry out Lex's plan. Lois Lane wasn't happy to let the revived Mayson out of her sight so soon, but she had gathered enough facts during the test to get started on her story. Lois was also looking forward to seeing Clark back at the Planet and finding out exactly what had been said in that conference room. The door to Clark's apartment was unlocked. Opening it slightly, Mayson tapped lightly on the door and entered to find Superman sitting on the couch with his face in his hands. Putting down the briefcase at the head of the short flight of stairs, Mayson went to him, touching him lightly on the shoulder. "Clark?" He jumped. "Sorry," Mayson apologised softly. "I couldn't get close to it, Mayson." Clark turned his sorrowful face up to her. Mayson sat beside him heavily, her face pale. "The place is ringed with Kryptonite." Gingerly, Mayson put her arm around the superhero. "Star Labs have a sample of my blood. Hopefully, they'll be able to determine and reproduce the antidote," Mayson said hopefully. "I've left a message for Lois," Clark told her. "Mayson, I'm sorry. I've failed you again." "Again? What do you mean?" Hesitatingly, Clark told her. "I heard this odd ticking sound ... when I realised what it was and that it was coming from your car ... I just didn't move fast enough." "Dying in your arms wasn't so bad." Mayson's smile was shaky at best. "Later, when I realised who you really were, I did wonder why you, with your superspeed, didn't reach me in time." The expression of pain on Clark's face almost made Mayson regret that she had asked -- but she needed to know. "For the first time, I was being loved by Lois as Clark, not Superman. She still doesn't know that's who I am. I called out a warning to you, but you never heard. The bomb exploded before I could get there. My head was still spinning from Lois' kiss. I just didn't move as fast I should have. That is why I failed you." Mayson's features froze. "You and Lois are --?" "Things've got complicated. There's this guy called Dan Scardino." Clark looked even more miserable. Mayson could only think of the kiss that cost her her life. She sat silently by his side. **** "Hey baby," Dan's dulcet tones distracted Lois from the disturbing message that had been left for her by Clark. Superman had been foiled by kryptonite. Clark wrote to say he was keeping an eye on Mayson. 'What about helping get the antidote for his blonde amour?' Lois wondered. Clark could be such a dolt at times. Dan tried to get her attention again. "Hey, what's up?" Lois' frown turned into a sweet smile as inspiration hit. "Clark's old girlfriend needs an antidote that Lex has got. I know where and I'm going to get it. You coming?" Lois leapt up and grabbed her coat. "Hold on there." Dan took hold of her arm. "Isn't this a job for Superman?" "He can't get close because there's too much kryptonite." Lois shook her arm free. Sometimes Dan could be so ... "Are you coming or what?" "Let me go alone. Isn't this too dangerous for you?" "Daniel Scardino, you have a lot to learn. There's a story in this." Lois pulled on her coat. Dan followed, keeping pace with her. **** Mayson awkwardly put her arm around Clark's shoulders. "I'm sorry about Lois." Clark slowly relaxed as she spoke. "But I didn't die. I'm here and alive. You can stop feeling guilty about that now." Clark's shoulders shook with barely suppressed emotion, guilt and loss, mingling as one. "Clark?" Mayson held him tighter. "I'm OK. Really." Clark's voice became steadier and he rested his head against her shoulder. "It's just I've kept it locked away ... I already felt like I was going insane, keeping my secret. Thinking about you wasn't helping matters." "I think I'll take that as a compliment," Mayson remarked dryly. "Mayson, I didn't mean --" He raised his head and directed apologetic eyes towards her. "It's all right, Clark." Mayson touched the side of his face and they leaned in to kiss. All of a sudden, the world went blurry to Mayson and her head spun. She reached out uncertainly for Clark but was out cold before he caught her in his arms. *** Leanne Shawler aka Volterra on IRC (volterra@sd.znet.com) http://www.znet.com/~volterra/leanne.html Lois and Clark Season 5 Fanfic: http://www.tempus.simplenet.com/season5/ ********************************************************** Midnight Dreaming: The Original Anthony Warlow Home Page: http://www.zweb.com/volterra/anthony.html ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 18:17:47 -0800 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Leanne Shawler Subject: FANFIC: This Drake is no Sitting Duck (3/4) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Lois parked her grey Jeep Cherokee half a block down from the building where Mayson had said Luthor was sequestered. "He's in there?" Dan examined the building through binoculars. It was a non-descript brownstone tenement building in the slum sector of Metropolis. Except for one door out the front, it appeared that the entire ground floor was boarded up. "Uh huh," Lois tapped her fingers on the steering wheel. "And we're just going to go in there?" Dan looked worriedly at Lois. Lois rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Of course! How else are we going to get the antidote?" "Lois, I've heard about your history with Lex. Maybe we should let the police handle it? With what Mayson's told you about this plan of Luthor's, you're not safe." "Despite what Mayson said, I don't believe Lex would kill me. He's more devious than that and besides, he's had plenty of time to do so before now." It was the one thing Lois was confident about. Luthor loved her too much to kill her. But in that instant, Lois thought of other fates that Lex might have in mind for her. "If we call in the police, we'll never get the antidote. Lex is far too clever to be caught by the police." Dan gave her a look. Lois sighed. "All right, all right, I'll call." She pulled her mobile phone out of her purse and dialled. "Henderson? Lois Lane here." She listened for a moment. "Yes, I know you haven't got any more information on the singles fraud. I'm calling about something else." Quickly, Lois filled in Inspector Henderson on Lex's new location and hung up before he could make her promise to stay away from Luthor. Lois got out of the car. When Scardino was slow in following suit, she ducked her head back into the car. "Coming?" she asked impatiently. Dan sighed and got out of the car. Someone had to keep an eye on her. How did Kent put up with this? Walking down on the opposite side of the street to Lex's hideout, Dan asked, "Do you have a plan on getting inside?" "You mean you don't?" Lois asked, a playful smile hovering about her lips. Dan surveyed the building front. "No, Lois, I don't. We could be running into a giant trap here." Lois ignored him. It was just like being with Clark, that cautious slowpoke. "There's an alleyway. Let's see if there's an entrance." Dan followed Lois closely as they crossed the street and ducked into a dimly lit alleyway. But for some old boxes and a few pieces of scattered rubbish, the alley was empty. Two-thirds of the way down the alley, before it became a dead end, a metal railing fence leaned dramatically into the alleyway. Hurrying forward, Lois and Dan discovered that it marked off a stairwell which led down to a door. They looked at each other in triumph and descended. Although apparently unguarded, the door was, unsurprisingly, locked. The two of them began to rummage in their pockets. Lois was quicker. "Let me," she said, fishing out her picklocks and expertly fiddling them in the keyhole until the lock unfastened with a barely audible click. "I didn't know you --" Dan whispered, gesturing at Lois' handiwork. "They come in handy." Lois shrugged, unsuccessfully hiding a proud smile as they entered. She tucked the picklocks back into her handbag. It was not much further along when they came across yet another locked door. "Please," said Dan with one of his goofy grins, "allow me." Dan Scardino pulled out an even larger set of picklocks and set to work on the lock. It took him a little longer than Lois, but he proved he was just as adept at breaking-and-entering as she. This second corridor was lined with doors and there was the undoubted smell of ether in the air. Thankfully, the doors had plate glass in them, through which they would be able to peek before sneaking on to the next door. "You take the left and I'll take the right," said Lois. "Right." said Dan. "No, left!" replied Lois. Dan raised his eyes to the heavens. Working systematically as a team, they were able to swiftly cover the subterranean floor. By the time they reached the elevator shaft, the smell of ether still had not been explained as the majority of the rooms had been deserted offices. "That smell has to be coming from somewhere," mused Dan. Lois looked back down the hallway. "Do you think we missed something?" Dan's head turned to follow her gaze. "It's... possible." "But not likely," decided Lois. "Let's keep looking." Lois punched the button besides the elevator. "Uhh ... Lois, do you think that was wise? Shouldn't we have taken the stairs?" He pointed to the fire stairwell. "Why? Nobody knows we're here, so why would they suspect anything?" The elevator doors opened with a loud "ping". Lois grinned triumphantly at Dan as the elevator revealed itself to be empty. They took the elevator up to the next floor, Scardino muttering that it was only one floor so why couldn't they have taken the stairs anyway. Lois ignored him. The coast was clear at the next level, and the two of them proceeded to investigate the area. They searched every level of the three storey building and came up empty. Each room was deserted and had been for a long time. Lois brushed the dust off her sleeves and skirt irritably. She just didn't get it. They headed back to the elevator. "Nothing! There's absolutely nothing!" Lois punched the Down button on the elevator. "Think this Mayson could have given us a bum lead?" asked Dan. "Maybe she *is* in with Lex and trying to lead us away so she can complete whatever nefarious plan Lex has concocted." "Mayson wouldn't do that," replied Lois, frowning as she thought on what Dan had said. "She was the Assistant D.A.! No, there has to be some other explanation for it." "Like what?" The elevator door opened and they entered. "Like ..." Lois went to hit the ground floor button and paused. There was a button for the basement. "Like how about looking below ground?" *** "Mayson? Mayson?" Clark's voice swam in and out of focus along with the blurred contours of his face. "Clark?" Even to Mayson, her voice sounded very far away. "Mayson?!" There was a clear note of panic in his voice. Mayson blinked, finally focusing on Clark's worried face, so close to her own. Clark had changed out of his Superman outfit while she had laid there unconscious and was now wearing a rather rumpled grey suit. Even when I'm dying, thought Mayson, he still looks great. "Wha- what happened?" she asked. "You passed out." "It ... it must be the poison starting to take effect." Clark was almost as pale as she. "Clark ... what I said about you being Superman, I'm ... I'm sorry. I just didn't know the whole story." Clark smoothed a blonde lock off her forehead. "It's OK, Mayson. I understand." Mayson reached up and with trembling fingers caressed Clark's cheek. He seemed so warm, her fingers so cold. "Clark," she whispered, pleadingly, as her hand slid around to the nape of his neck, drawing his face closer. She didn't want to die, not now. Not, at least, without-- Their lips met, brushing lightly, his lips warming her cool ones. The second kiss was less cousinly, Clark kissing her fervently, as if the heat of his kiss could restore health to her body. Mayson blinked rapidly as Clark lifted his head. It was if he was hearing something. "What ... what is it?" Clark looked down at Mayson, so fragile in his arms, his features agonised. Metropolis needed his help, but he couldn't leave Mayson. "Super-hearing?" Mayson prompted. "Yes, I have to--" Clark paused. With relief, he heard on the fire department's radio band that disaster had been averted. Clark gazed down at Mayson and caressed her cheek. "I have to stay here and look after you. You mustn't give up, Mayson. Star Labs will call soon with that antidote." Mayson sighed. "I wish I had your confidence." *** "I'm glad I don't have your confidence," remarked Dan Scardino as he followed Lois out of the elevator and into the pitch-black hallway. Lois ignored him, rummaging in her handbag for her miniature flashlight. "You should be more careful, you never know what, or who, might be out there." "How very true, Mr. Scardino." The overhead fluorescent lights blinked on, temporarily blinding them, but Lois recognised that voice instantly. "Lex," she said. "Indeed, my dear," Lex stepped forward with a charming smile that was as deadly as the gun in his hand. "How nice of you to come visit me." Lois delivered a shaky smile and an even shakier line: "Well, we were in the neighbourhood..." "Now," Lex gestured down the hallway with his gun, "if you'll kindly lead the way ..." Lois gave Dan a worried look. With kryptonite ringing the building, this was one scrape Superman would be unable to get her out of. *** Mayson was curled up with Clark on the sofa, resting weakly against him. The phone rang, startling the two of them. Clark answered the phone on the third ring. "Hello?" "Ah, Mr. Kent, how good of you to be at home," sounded Lex's voice smugly. "Luthor," grated Clark. Mayson sat up, her face white. "Very good, Kent. Now I have a special offer for you. Listen carefully and do exactly what I say or Lois Lane will die." "Lois!" "Clark, you're doing amazingly well on name recognition," Lex chuckled, "but then of course, you are a reporter." "What do you want?" "That's more like it, Kent. Now Ms. Lane has done something smart for once and called in the police before she rather conveniently bumped into me." "Is she all right?!" Clark couldn't keep the terrified note out of his voice. "For the moment and how long that moment lasts, depends upon you." Lex outlined his demands to Clark: "You will order the police to move back two city blocks. In return, I'll hand over Lois and her chum Scardino." "Scardino?" Clark's voice held a mixture of bafflement and disgust. Lex chuckled. "You have an hour." Lex hung up. Clark sat, cradling the dead telephone receiver in his hand. He was totally still, and yet his mind whirled. "Clark?" Mayson touched his shoulder. She was shaky on her feet, yet standing. "Lex has Lois?" "Yes." Clark somehow managed to force out the word between his teeth. "We have to think of something!" Mayson urged. "We only have an hour." Clark turned and looked down at her. Mayson turned to him urgently. "Clark! The briefcase!" For a moment, Clark looked confused and then it hit him. "My God! The bomb! We never defused it!" "It's not set to go off ... I was supposed to set the timer before I left your apartment." Mayson said. "But what if Lex didn't tell the whole truth about that either. "Clark! We have to get rid of it!" Clark immediately obliged by grabbing the briefcase that still stood by the doorway and throwing it up into the heavens. He returned to her side. "We should call the police now," Mayson reminded him. "Yes, but I don't trust Luthor to let Lois go. We have to think of a plan!" Clark started pacing. Mayson sat and watched him. The poison was seriously taking its toll. Mayson felt as weak as a newborn kitten, but she could still think. The phone rang again. Clark grabbed it. "Yes? Doctor Klein!" Clark listened for a moment. "But you're still not quite sure? We'll be right over." "The antidote?" Clark shook his head. "Not quite, but Doctor Klein thinks that just maybe he's close enough to alleviate the poison slightly. It gives us more time, and," Clark smiled, "we'll be able to pick his brains for ideas. The man's brilliant." He spun into his Superman suit. Mayson looked at him in wonder. "Come on. Let's go." *** "You won't get away with this," Lois called from where she was tied up next to Dan Scardino. Seated at a metal desk, Lex looked up from the sheaf of papers that occupied him. "Can't you think of anything more original than that? Very well." He sighed dramatically and glared menacingly. "I can and I will." "The police have this place surrounded, there's no chance for escape, Lex, so why not give it up?" "Lois, my dear, if there was no chance, you would not be alive now. While you live, however ..." His predator's grin sent shivers down her spine. "Now, if you wouldn't mind keeping quiet, I have work to do." Lex returned his attention to the papers. Lois grimaced and started struggling, hoping to loosen the ropes. Dan hissed at her: "Lois, keep still." Twisting to look over her shoulder, Lois gave him a strange look. "We have to get out of here," she whispered to him. "Shhh." "Shhh?!" Lois's response was almost not a whisper and the two of them looked over at Lex, thankful to see that there was no reaction. "I have a plan," confided Dan. "What plan?" demanded Lois in an urgent whisper. "It's on a need to know basis," replied Dan smugly. "Wha -- at?" exclaimed Lois. Again the two of them looked over at Lex. Lois looked back at Dan. "Believe me, I need to know." "Sorry," was Dan's short reply. "I don't think you've got a plan at all," accused Lois. "I think--" "Will you two stop chattering away?" Lex requested casually. "I can hear every word you're saying and you're distracting me from my work." Dan gave Lois a "see?" look and shushed her. Lois sat there, alternately fuming at Lex, Dan and at herself for getting into this mess. *** Superman entered Dr. Klein's laboratory at Star Labs carrying Mayson Drake in his arms. "Doctor Klein!" he called. "You have the antidote?" "Superman!" exclaimed Klein. "What a surprise! I was expecting Clark." Superman lowered Mayson gently to the floor. Mayson swayed but managed to stay upright. "Clark got a call from Luthor about Lois. He asked me to step in and bring Ms. Drake over to you. He's gone down to help out the police." Dr. Klein nodded understandingly. "Yes, yes, I see, I see. And I suppose you'll be dashing off to help Clark deal with Mr. Luthor?" Superman shook his head. "I'm afraid not, Doctor Klein. Lex has Kryptonite." Dr. Klein pulled an indigestive grimace. "Oh." He turned his attention to Mayson. "Come, sit down and let's have another look at you." Mayson did as she was told. As Doctor Klein flashed a penlight into her eyes, she said, "Lex has captured Lois! We must do something!" "Clark Kent is a capable young man." Dr. Klein glanced at Superman who was frowning at some bubbling beakers, "and Lois a resourceful young woman. I'm afraid I'm not qualified with figuring out rescues." He ordered Mayson, "Pump your hand." Mayson did so, feeling the broad flat band tighten as Dr. Klein took her blood pressure. "If only we could figure out a way of rescuing Lois ..." Dr. Klein nodded. "Tricky, tricky." He gazed sorrowfully at them. "Ms. Drake, Superman, I'm afraid that such strategies and tactics are beyond me." Mayson gave a despairing look over at Superman. He looked so closed off and remote, standing with his back to them. They were both utterly helpless in the face of Lex's machinations. Her thoughts churned as Dr. Klein gave her the almost-antidote. She barely felt the needle slip under her skin. "Now, Ms. Drake," Dr. Klein said, breaking her reverie with a hand on her shoulder. "You should start feeling better in an hour or two. Gradually, the effect will start to wear off and you will start feeling ill again. I have to warn you, Ms. Drake, that there may be side-effects. Naturally, we were not given enough time to do a thorough testing, only that it was not as toxic as what it is meant to cure. We'll continue to work on improving the antidote here at the Labs. This is a most unusual poison, most unusual." "Yes, Dr. Klein, I understand." Mayson gave him a brave smile. "Thank you." "Thank *you*," Dr. Klein shook her hand. "You have given us quite a challenge." "Now it's our turn to face a challenge," Mayson said. *** "Mayson, I can't let you do this." Clark, in his Superman costume, slowly landed at street level, a block away from Luthor's hideout. "What other choice do we have?" Mayson asked, trying not to enjoy the sensation of being in his arms too much. This could very well be the last time she would experience it. Reluctantly, she slipped out of his arms. "I'll be all right," she promised him, "and I'll get Lois out safe." Clark stood and watched her walk away, feeling more helpless than he had ever felt before in his life. Mayson walked calmly past the police cordon that Lieutenant Henderson had set up. She walked on to the end of the street. Just as Lois and Dan had found out earlier, gaining access to Luthor's domain was easy. The side door in the alleyway remained unguarded. Shaking slightly with nerves, Mayson made her way down into the basement. Klein's antidote was working like a charm, but she didn't know how long she had before weakness overtook her once more. Once in the basement, she was quickly captured by Luthor's henchmen and brought before Luthor. On the way, through tunnels not normally found under a Metropolis brownstone, Mayson made sure to know the route they had taken. There was the off-chance that she would still be alive at the end of the upcoming confrontation and be able to escape. It surprised her that the journey was so short. "Well, well," drawled Lex, looking up from his papers. "What do we have here?" "Mayson!" gasped Lois, surprised. Mayson swiftly shot her a warning look. Lois quickly added, "I thought you were dead!" "Lex! What is *she* doing here?" Mayson demanded as her guards roughly shoved her closer to Luthor. "She's supposed to be at Clark's apartment!" Lex shrugged "It seems that even the best plans go astray." He dismissed the guards. "Do not disturb us," he ordered them. Lex gazed at Mayson penetratingly. "Now where have you been, my pretty?" "Trying to get up the nerve to do what you ordered," replied Mayson, trying to still her trembling. Smiling, Lex inquired, "Not feeling too well? Or perhaps it's the lies you're telling me." Mayson stood very still. "I've been wondering how coincidental it is that Lois discovers my hideout on the very same day I let you out on to the streets." "I have my sources, Lex," called Lois from the far end of the room, coming to Mayson's rescue. "I've been working on finding your location ever since your escape. It was only a matter of time." Lex raised an eyebrow. "But I did it, Lex," Mayson told him. "I left the bomb in Clark's apartment!" "No!" screamed Lois convincingly. Lex seemed particularly amused by this turn of events. "Hmmm, with Clark Kent out of the picture and the Kryptonite to keep Superman away ..." He paused and turned his gaze upon Lois, who bit her lip. "Yes, Lois, that would mean you would be free -- or should I say *mine* -- without anyone to destroy the wedding this time around." The sound of Lex's laugh chilled Mayson's soul. "I don't think so, Lex," interrupted Scardino, raising his head bravely. "Lois is a woman who makes her own choices and she's here with *me*." Lois, torn between derision and horror at the possible consequences of Dan's statement, opened her mouth to deny it. Before she could, Lex had pulled a gun out of his desk drawer, He pointed it at them. "That can be remedied," Lex said, his voice cold. Lois screamed. "NO!" Lex fired the gun and seconds too late, Mayson sprang into action. With a karate-chop, the gun tumbled out of Lex's suddenly nerveless fingers. Mayson dove for the gun, and came up with it, pointing it defiantly at Lex. "Don't move," she warned. Slowly, Lex raised his hands in the air. "So you did betray me." Mayson kept her eye on him but refused to reply. "Lois? Are you all right?" "I'm fine," Lois choked back a sob. "But Dan ..." Mayson motioned at Lex with her gun. "Keep an eye on him, Lois. Tell me if he moves the slightest inch." "OK," Lois said softly. With the gun still trained on Luthor, Mayson moved over and felt for Dan's pulse. "He's alive," she said with relief. She risked a longer look at him. "It doesn't look good though. We have to get him out of here." "I've a phone in my purse," said Lois. "It's over by the wall." "Thanks, Lois, I'll find it," Mayson said. To Lex, she ordered, "I want you lying on the floor right now." Lex raised his eyebrow. "Do it!" "Mayson, my dear, I believe your hands are shaking," Lex spoke casually. "Could it be that the poison is taking effect?" "If it is, Lex," Mayson growled, aware of her weakness, "I'll have to shoot you twice to kill you and I swear the first time will hurt. Now get down on the floor. Hands behind your head." Lex did as he was told, and Mayson scurried back to the wall. With Lois calling directions, she managed to find the purse and keep an eye on Lex at the same time. Mayson pulled out the phone and dialled. "Henderson. Listen carefully. I have Luthor at gunpoint but the rest of the building is unsecured. Get your men down to the alleyway and you'll find some stairs going down. We're all in the basement. Come armed. And Henderson? I've also got a man down; we need an ambulance!" She paused as Henderson shouted out orders to his men and finally got a word in. "Lois is here, she's ok." Lex, motionless on the floor, said, "You did betray me." "Of course, Lex, what else did you expect?" Mayson was tiring and as a result, angry. "I was the assistant district attorney. How could I break the law?" "You're going to die." "Perhaps," replied Mayson, "but if I do before the police arrive, I'll make sure you'll be dead too." *** Mayson's eyes flickered twice before opening. It took a moment longer for them to focus, but at last the room swam into sharp detail. It was dark, but there was light sneaking between the cracks of the blinds. "You're awake," said a familiar voice. Mayson's eyes focused. "Clark!" Clark patted her hand. "How do you feel?" To her wonder, Mayson felt fine, and said so. "The last thing I remember is seeing Lois and Dan off in the ambulance and then collapsing ..." "I flew you to Star Labs to get another partial antidote," Clark told her. "It was lucky for you that Doctor Klein had perfected it." "Lucky indeed." Mayson took a deep breath. "How is Dan?" "Mending," was Clark's brief reply. "His employers are transferring him to Washington as soon as he's well enough." "And Lois?" Clark sighed sadly. "She was shaken up a little. She hasn't forgiven me for not being there when she needed me." "When are you going to tell her, Clark?" He shrugged. "The doctors say you can be out in a day or two. What are you going to do?" Mayson smiled. "Find a place, see if I can get my old job back." The smile turned into a grin. "Keep Superman on the straight and narrow. What else is there to do?" "Straight and narrow?" Clark asked, a hint of laughter in his voice. "After what you did today?" Mayson smiled ruefully. "Well, straight and narrow*ish*!" THE END.
